Cartoonists may work in many formats, such as animation, booklets, comic strips, comic books, editorial cartoons, graphic novels, manuals, gag cartoons, graphics. 1) Abu Abraham :
Attupurathu Mathew Abraham, pen name Abu, was an Indian cartoonist, journalist, and author. He was a lifelong atheist and rationalist. In a long career spanning 40 years, Abu Abraham worked for various national and international newspapers including the Bombay Chronicle, Shankar’s Weekly, Blitz, Tribune, The Observer (1956–66), The Guardian (1966–69), and The Indian Express (1969–81).
2) Bal Thackeray :
Bal Keshav Thackeray, was an Indian politician who founded the Shiv Sena, a Hindu right-wing Marathi ethnocentric party active mainly in the western state of Maharashtra. Thackeray began his professional career as a cartoonist with the English language daily The Free Press Journal in Mumbai, but left it in 1960 to form his own political weekly Marmik.
3) Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana :
Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana, known professionally as Bapu, was an Indian film director, and screenwriter known for his works in Telugu cinema, and bollywood. He was also a music artist, painter, illustrator, cartoonist, and designer. In 2013, he was awarded the Padma Shri, for his contribution to Indian art and cinema. Bapu’s paintings focus on Hindu mythological characters, and he has painted the Hindu epic Ramayana as a pictorial story. His character portrayals, such as Shiva, Bhima, Duryodhana, look distinctly male with wide chests, large jaws and large biceps; while Krishna and Rama are more feminine in build. His paintings have decorated the cover pages of many magazines in India and Abroad. Telugu Naadi Magazine published from USA for Telugu audience have published Bapu’s great paintings. Bapu also later served on their advisory board to guide and have an outstanding content for the magazine that catered to Telugu people.
4) Barun Roy :
Barun Roy, is an Indian author, journalist and blogger. He was educated at Darjeeling and Chennai. The first book authored by Roy was Portraits of Life, a collection of short stories. ‘Nafisha’, the first story in this book, later inspired a Bollywood blockbuster Yahaan. Other books authored by Roy include Beginners Guide to Journalism, Slim and Smart Body, Vedas, Revisited and Fallen Cicada – Unwritten History of Darjeeling Hills. A dedicated journalist, Roy founded Beacon, a monthly English news magazine published from Darjeeling, West Bengal. Beacon, now The Himalayan Beacon is a popular magazine with a large base in Darjeeling Hills.
5) Raj Shrikant Thackeray :
Raj Shrikant Thackeray, is an Indian politician, cartoonist and the founder and president of the right-wing Marathi ethnocentric regional political party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(“Maharashtra Reformation Army”) in the state of Maharashtra, India. He is the nephew of Balasaheb Thackeray, and a cousin of Uddhav Thackeray, the current leader and chairperson of the Shiv Sena.
6) S. Jithesh :
S. Jithesh, is a speed cartoonist and former Vice-Chairman of Kerala Cartoon Academy. He has initiated and popularised “Super-Speedy Cartooning” through his infotainment cartoon stage shows named Varayarangu. His infotainment art form, Varayarangu, is a blend of poetry, anecdotes, and socio-political satire with high speed drawing. Sketching of more than thousand celebrity caricatures at a quick pace and satirical commentary is the major attraction of his cartoon stage shows.He is recognised as the “World’s Fastest Performing Cartoonist” since his ability to speed sketch fifty celebrity caricatures within five minutes.
7) Shivram Dattatreya Phadnis :
Shivram Dattatreya Phadnis, Born in Bhoj, Belgaum, India, Phandis took his formal art education at Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. He designed the cover of the Diwali special issue of the Marathi magazine Mohini every year since 1952. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists in June 2001. A number his cartoons have been exhibited and published by the Montreal International Salon of Cartoons. He was invitee participant in ‘Cartoons from India’ exhibition at Frankfurt Book Fair. He is married to Shakuntala and has two daughters. He lives in Pune.
9) Shubham Gupta :
Shubham Gupta, is an Indian writer of fiction and poetry. He is also a cartoonist, illustrator, essayist and lyricist. Shubham’s first book of fiction was a compendium of short stories named ‘Conflict And Other Stories’, published 2005. It has received critical public acclaim. His book of poetry ‘On The Way, By The Way’ is a collection of nineteen thoughts. He has written the lyrics for the track ‘Christmas Time – The Snowfall in Cincinnati’, recorded in the US in 2007
10) Vasant Sarwate :
Vasant Sarwate, Vasant Sarwate is a cartoonist and a writer from India who has been published primarily in Marathi publications. He was born in Kolhapur on February 3, 1927, He is a professional civil engineer, and worked at Associated Cement Companies for most of his working life.
